A useful camera system starts with a purpose, not a megapixel count. A wide overview of the garden, recognition at a gate, and reading a plate in a controlled lane are different tasks. A camera that “covers everything” may render a person as a few pixels and fail to provide the detail you need.
Match the camera view to the task

Lens, field of view, and pixel density
A wide lens covers more area, but distributes the available resolution across that scene. A narrower view reveals more detail at a selected point. An 8 MP camera is therefore not automatically better at recognition than a well-positioned 4 MP unit. Distance, focal length, mounting angle, compression, and light all matter.
Mounting every camera high under the roof may prevent tampering, yet produce mostly top-of-head views. An entrance often needs a closer-to-face-level image, with a second overview camera protecting the wider area. Confirm the actual view on site rather than relying only on a diagram.
Daylight, WDR, IR, and real night tests
A dark doorway against bright sky needs effective wide dynamic range (WDR). A specification-sheet number is less useful than footage from a comparable scene. At night, sensor size, lens, shutter time, movement, and available light matter; more resolution can also mean more noise.
Infrared illumination works without visible light, but can reflect from a white wall, soffit, spider web, rain, or window glass. A camera behind glazing is often blinded by its own IR. White light can preserve colour and deter intruders, but may disturb residents and neighbours. Test the final view after dark with a moving person, not only a static preview.
IP with PoE or an analogue upgrade?
For a new installation, IP cameras powered over Ethernet are a common choice: one network cable carries data and power, expansion is straightforward, and a UPS can protect the switch or recorder. The design still needs adequate PoE power, network capacity, outdoor cable protection, and surge protection.
Existing coaxial cabling need not always be discarded. If it is in good condition, a modern HD-over-coax system may be a sensible upgrade without building work. Decide from cable condition, required image quality, remote-access needs, and lifecycle cost—not a technology label alone.
Recorder, memory card, or cloud?
- NVR/DVR: central recording and convenient search, ideally using storage designed for continuous writes. One recorder can, however, become a single point of failure or theft.
- Camera memory card: simple local recording and a useful secondary layer, but limited in capacity and vulnerable with the camera.
- Cloud: an off-site copy and remote access, with subscription fees and dependence on connectivity, supplier terms, and data-processing arrangements.
Mirrored disks improve availability after one disk fails, but are not a complete backup. They do not protect against recorder theft, user error, or failure of the whole unit. Consider a second storage route for the most important zone or selected events.
Estimate recording capacity
For continuous recording, a practical estimate is:
Example: 4 cameras × 4 Mb/s × 10.8 × 14 days ≈ 2,419 GB, or about 2.4 TB. Add headroom for overhead, variable bitrate, and the disk’s actual formatted capacity.
This is only an estimate. H.265, frame rate, resolution, scene complexity, and event-only recording change the result. Wind-blown trees consume more data than a quiet corridor at similar quality settings. Event recording saves space but poor detection may miss the beginning or all of an incident. Verify the real retention period after installation.
Cybersecurity matters
- Replace defaults with long, unique passwords and enable multi-factor authentication where available.
- Keep camera, recorder, and app firmware current; choose vendors with a clear support policy.
- Do not expose the recorder directly to the internet with an improvised port-forwarding rule. Prefer a supported secure connection or your own VPN.
- Separate surveillance devices from personal computers and home devices where practical.
- Physically protect the recorder, switch, and cables; consider a UPS.
- Set reliable time synchronisation and periodically prove that footage can be replayed.
Privacy: record only what is necessary
The safest design limits the image to your property. A view covering a pavement, road, neighbour’s property, or workers may go beyond purely personal or household activity and trigger data-protection duties. The answer depends on the circumstances, so this guide is not legal advice.
Use physical positioning and privacy masks, keep recordings only as long as justified, disable audio unless it is necessary, control user access, and avoid publishing footage on social media. A warning sign does not make an unnecessarily wide camera angle acceptable, although transparent information remains an important part of responsible operation.
Checklist before buying
- What exact detail must be visible in each zone?
- What does the scene look like backlit, in rain, and after dark?
- Does the lens provide the required view rather than just a high megapixel number?
- How will outdoor cables and connections be routed and protected?
- How many days are required, and is recording continuous or event-based?
- What happens if power, internet, or one disk fails?
- Who updates the equipment and who has remote access?
- Does the image include more space than the purpose requires?
A sound system combines the view, lighting, storage, network, and privacy. Survey the site before purchase and test every objective in daylight and at night after installation. Real footage—not the box specification—proves whether the system delivers the required detail.
