A “slow computer” can mean a long boot, freezes with several browser tabs, delayed file access, loud fans, or performance that falls after a few minutes. Before buying a replacement or installing a one-click “optimiser”, identify the symptom and protect the data.

Protect the data first. If a drive clicks, disappears, reports read errors, or the computer has been dropped or exposed to liquid, turn it off. Repeated scans may worsen the condition of a failing drive. If the files matter, the correct first step is a professional copy or disk image.

1. Make a verified backup

Copy documents, photographs, accounting data, email profiles, and recovery codes to external storage or a trusted cloud. Open several files from the backup to prove it works. 5. Assess the drive carefully

An old HDD is a frequent bottleneck, while a worn SSD may cause errors. SMART data can reveal some faults, but a healthy-looking result is not a guarantee. When read operations freeze, files become corrupt, or storage warnings appear, backup takes priority. Avoid repeatedly running surface scans or file-system repairs on the only copy of important data.

6. Consider RAM and SSD upgrades in context

When memory is almost full during ordinary work, the system moves data to storage and becomes less responsive. Closing tabs is a temporary remedy; persistent pressure may justify more RAM. Check the exact model, available slots, supported capacity, and module compatibility. Some slim laptops have soldered memory.

Replacing an HDD with an SSD usually improves startup and application loading, but it will not fix a weak processor or overheating. Verify connector type, physical size, data migration, and drive health first. On a very old PC, the combined price of an SSD, RAM, battery, and supported operating system can exceed the value of the machine.

7. Rule out overheating

A processor or graphics chip may lower its speed as temperature rises. A common pattern is good performance after a cold boot followed by a major slowdown. Use the laptop on a hard surface, inspect vents, and listen for the fan. Opening a device, disconnecting its battery, and replacing thermal compound require suitable tools; damaged connectors or cells cost more than professional cleaning.

8. Treat reinstallation as the final step

A clean installation can solve a damaged or heavily cluttered system, but it cannot repair failing storage, RAM, or cooling. Prepare a verified backup, encryption key, credentials, licences, installers, and network drivers first. If the issue returns on a fresh system, investigate the hardware.

When should you stop and book a diagnosis?

  • The drive clicks, disappears, or reports imminent failure.
  • The computer was dropped or exposed to liquid, smells burnt, or becomes extremely hot.
  • It contains the only copy of important personal or business files.
  • Windows will not start, loops in recovery, or requests an encryption recovery key.
  • There are random restarts, graphics artefacts, or memory errors.
  • You suspect credential theft, remote access, or ransomware.
A safe order: backup → describe the symptom → measure load → check startup and free space → update and scan → assess storage, memory, and heat → choose repair or upgrade. This order protects information instead of masking a fault at its expense.
